The Ethical Mattress Co. (EMC) was founded by Bryan Umiker in 2018 and opened its showroom in Millburn, New Jersey, in 2022. Drawing on over 20 years of experience in the bedding and retail industries, Bryan’s journey began in luxury retail at Bloomingdale’s, which later included leadership roles in business development at King Koil and as Vice President at Casper. Over time, he grew disillusioned with certain lower-grade product aspects and unethical sales tactics, realizing that many in the industry prioritize shareholder interests over the quality and ethical standards that consumers deserve. In response, Bryan started and created a business model focused on organic, natural, high-quality, American-made mattresses and products, paired with exceptional customer service—free from the typical sales tactics of the mattress industry.
The store’s ethos is to provide consumers with a selection of well-made, toxin-free, natural, and organic hybrid mattresses—and other sleep products—at everyday low prices, which can be tested in a stress-free shopping experience without unnecessary frills.
